Ad.ly  is a brand new advertising network only very recently launched that inserts ads once a day on your twitter account. The ad network seeks your approval first so you would basically be “indirectly” tweeting the ad. Its almost as if you’d be “endorsing by approving” their ad. Interesting…

This sort of control is great to have on advertising right? As the publisher so you’re technically deciding very directly what your followers see. This is great in comparison to something like Adsense where the ads are more based on bids than on the content and much less approved by you (what control you do have is choosing who you DON’T want to advertise!).
This could be counted as a win-win for both the advertisers and the users on twitter. On the one hand, ad.ly “enables advertisers to reach the highly sought after Twitter audience by connecting brands with the most influential people in the community”. And on the other hand, the publisher gets to choose which ads they think their followers might actually benefit from! It’s like an affiliate marketing and advertising hybrid!
When you sign up as a publisher you can actually set your required weekly price from the advertiser, which is another great level of control. That being said I would probably go with the recommended amount or a little less, to get maximum benefit from it. It’d be a shame to lose out on advertisers because you set your price too high right!?
On a side note, you can actually donate a part or all of your earnings to a charity of your choice. Excellent! I hope that someone like Bono will use their sea of followers to feed the hungry instead of simply adding to their millions…
Over all ad.ly seems like an excellent addition to the world of Twitter. Who wants to start a bet that Google will buy it!?
By the way, ad.ly is currently holding a competition for who can get the most users to sign up using a custom referral link. The winner gets a Macbook Pro!

The ability to retweet on Twitter was already available and has been mostly of use to those in business situations who could take advantage of their followers retweeting their promotions. This has been drastically changed with the retweet feature now being in a simple to use button under any of your feeds tweets.
You may ask yourself why you would bother retweeting more often just because of a button, and you are right to do so. After all you are just making the ones you follow more exposed to the tweeters who follow you. However this works both ways.
Your tweets can also be retweeted by your followers. The new feature doesn’t just place a simple RT in front of the retweeted tweet on your profile. By being retweeted your profile picture and username appears next to your own tweet, on someone else’s page!
For example today I retweeted @johncmayer and his photo and link appeared on my profile. For him this means that now all of my followers (who otherwise may not have seen his tweet) have been exposed to his content and may choose to follow him and/or retweet it again creating a ripple effect and sending his message to an entirely new audience.
By being promoted by other twitter users one could potentially gain thousands of new followers. Which we all know translates to twinfluence. For social users who hover around 100-200 followers this provides an avenue for increased twitter success. It should be noted however that without interesting tweets you are unlikely to be retweeted in this new fashion so although the features are useful, tweet-quality is still king in what determines your networking success.
The new feature also gives even more power to those with staggering amounts of followers already. For example @aplusk who is almost at 4 million followers could choose to retweet a message and give that person’s content access to the gargantuan amount of followers he has. For tweeters who promote their own blog or product this could be the best free advertising campaign that they ever get. Even television commercials won’t receive upwards of 3.5 million views in a matter of seconds.
The sidebar on twitter now includes a section appropriately titled ‘retweets’. Within this selection there are 3 mini-sections. The 1st of which is ‘Retweets by others’ which shows what the people you follow have been retweeting. This again will give added exposure to those lucky enough to be retweeted by someone like @biz. The 2nd section is ‘Retweets by you’ which is as simple as it sounds; it lists all the tweets that you have retweeted and gives you the option to untweet those messages.
The 3rd and most important section for you is the ‘Your tweets retweeted’ section. This section allows you to follow which of your tweets have been retweeted and by whom. This allows you to track your tweets and observe the spread of your content and username which is ultimately the thing that will make this feature useful to you.
All of these sections also show who else has retweeted what you have. For them it means they are being exposed to others who have similar interests and for you it means that you are also being exposed to others with similar interests, others who could potentially become your newest followers.
As you can see the retweet feature will change how we network and how we make connections with others on twitter. The button doesn’t guarantee twitter success but it does make it easier for those with interesting things to say.

On Twitter, you have 140 characters to play with. Most people stick to the 26 letters, 10 numbers, half a dozen punctuation marks and currency signs. Fact is, underneath your fingers there are a treasure trove of characters to make your tweets more interesting, shorter & more colourful. By making your tweets stand out, you will get more people actively reading them because subconsciously your eyes are drawn to them. If your tweets are useful (and I’ve no reason to doubt why they should be), you should end up with more clicks on links, more retweets and generally more twitter love.
Here’s a few of my favourite special characters that I like to put in Tweets.
I explain how to get them on the most common form of keyboards – the US Keyboard Layout (which is used by the most of the western world). If different, I will also include the UK keycode, between them that should cover most of the keyboards in English speaking countries, but if English isn’t your native language, these may be different. The characters are there, but you’ll have to dig to find them.
11. The Ampersand
How To Get It: Press Shift + 7
When Should You Use It?
This character is very simple, as it shortens the word “and” to 1 character, saving yourself two characters in the process.
22. The “At” Sign
How To Get It: UK Keyboards – Shift+’
US Keyboards – Shift+2
When You Should Use It?
Used all the time in emails, the @ sign can also be used for events (for example, the show begins @ 7pm). Saving yourself one character in the process.
33. The Asterix
How to Get It: Press Shift + 8
When You Should Use It?
This is one I use all the time for emotions, verbs, basically what I am doing. If I’m writing **smiles and nods**, I’m smiling and nodding. This is great in conveying how I feel about things, as well as emotions that are difficult to convey such as sarcasm.
44. The Music Symbol (Joined Quavers)
How to Get It: Hold Alt & Type 14
When You Should Use It?
I’ve begun seeing this more and more when people are talking about music & songs they are listening to, particularly when using services such as Last.fm & Spotify. Often people will post music recommendations, followed with joined quavers, to show that it’s a musical link.
It’s a great idea to do this, as it can be a text based warning to users, by saying “this link is a Spotify link, so a song will automatically play when opened”. This’ll stop users opening music links when they really shouldn’t be.
55. Hearts
How to get it: Hold Alt & Type 3
When You Should Use It?
The obvious place is by sharing a link that you love, or a twitterer you love, or anything you “More than like”. This negates the old <3 symbol used for hearts, saving you one character, plus it looks a lot neater.
66. The Pipe
How To Get It: Shift+\
When You Should Use It?
Originally used in Computer Science to show the destination of data (amongst other things), the Pipe character has found a new home in title bars accross the Search Engine Optimized web. Use this in tweets to split up your tweets, I like it whenever I post a blog title, to split my name of the blog post away from my blog name.
The other way I’ve seen people using this is through retweeting, as one of the standards for commenting on a retweet – by putting a | at the end of the retweetee (is that even a word?), you can define what are your thoughts & what are the retweetee’s thoughts.
77. The Bullet
How To Get It: Hold Alt + Type 7
When You Should Use It?
I’ve found this is great at highlighting a tweet with one at the beginning, and one at the end of the tweet. However, with this (and number 8 on the list), you should be careful, as you can really annoy people with these.
Used sparingly, bullets in tweets can have a huge effect on the CTR of links on the site, because you use solid shapes to draw in people to your tweet. You will stand out, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing – well – that’s down to you, and what you are drawing attention to.
88. Pointers
How To Get These: Hold Alt & Type 16 (for right pointer) or 17 (for left pointer)
When Should You Use This?
Very, very, sparingly. “Play Forward” & “Play Reverse” can launch your tweets into the stratosphere. However, use them too much, and you could destroy all credibility you have.
Using these characters in tweets REALLY highlight your tweets, as they act like arrows, pointing people’s eyes to your tweet. They are “filled in” as well, so that they are instant eye catchers on your tweets full of text.
Please be careful though, as overuse can make you seem like a bit of a spammer and an attention seeker, which could result in mass unfollowing. Every now and then, for really important tweets, you can get away with it. Just.
Word of Warning
These characters work fine on Twitter, a lot of desktop clients, and on the iPhone. However, because they work on a number of systems doesn’t mean that they work on all systems, so use them sparingly and a way to highlight, as to not only not annoy, but to make your tweets accesible to as many of your followers as possible.
However, these are great ways to brighten up your tweets using more obscure characters, so why not use one of the characters above the next time you tweet your favourite song, or link to your blog, or retweet a friend? I’m sure you will stand out in more ways than one!

Define Your Purpose

Before you go changing anything around on your twitter profile to make it more professional you must decide what the purpose of the account is.
Is your purpose to connect with friends and family?
Is your purpose to share important updates to customers of your store or online business?
Is your purpose to attract potential clients and to give them an understanding of why they should choose your product or service?
If your purpose is only to connect with friends and family then you don’t really need to have a professional presence in my opinion.
But if your purpose is business related then the following steps will help you create a professional presence on twitter.
Sometimes people will have a personal and a business-related purpose for using twitter. In those cases I recommend having a personal twitter account and a separate business related account on twitter.

1. Get a custom background

To create a professional presence on twitter you want to have your own unique background. The default background is used by millions of people and you want to set yourself apart.
There are many websites that will help you create a customized background for your twitter account. And the best part is that most of them are free.
To create a custom background for my twitter account I used Twitbacks.com.

2. Use a picture of yourself

Twitter allows you to have a small avatar picture associated with your account and I recommend using a personal photograph for this.
It doesn’t have to be a professional headshot where your hair and makeup is perfect; it just needs to be a picture of you.
This allows your followers to connect your tweets and messages with a real person. This personal touch adds credence to what you say.

3. Your phone number

I like to post my phone number on my twitter account for all of my followers to see. When followers see a phone number listed with a twitter account it gives them confidence that if they had a problem or question there is someone they could call.
I know some of you will be uncomfortable doing this and it’s completely understandable.
But if you run a small business or work in any line of sales then you really need to have your phone number listed on your twitter account.
To my knowledge twitter does not allow you to actually list the phone number as part of your account. But you can have it be part of your background.
In the example below you can see my phone number is on the far left side:
nickstraffic-twitip

4. List your email address

You will also want to list your e-mail address on your twitter account. Just as with phone numbers, you can’t actually list your e-mail on your account but you can include it as part of your background.
I know some of you will be concerned about posting your e-mail and receiving spam.
To deal with this I created a second e-mail address that I used specifically for my business. And this is the e-mail address that I post on my twitter account.
Luckily Gmail has a very good spam filter and so I actually get very few spam messages in my inbox each week.

5. Be professional in your tweets

People follow you for a reason. Whether it’s to hear about new products your store is offering or updates about the cause you represent, people are listening to what you say.
And the minute you deviate from that you will lose followers.
So before you post a tweet ask yourself, “Why are people following me? And is this new tweet something they want to hear about?”
If the answer is no or if you’re not sure then do not post the new tweet.

6. Tweet regularly but don’t overdo it

I will usually tweet something in the morning and then sometimes in the evening. 1 to 3 tweets today is optimal.
You want to your followers to see something from you each day but you don’t want to overdo it.
The last thing you want is for one of your followers to see that the last 20 tweets are all from you. When this happens to me I immediately unfollow the person.

7. Only follow people that you’re interested in

A popular way to get followers is to follow a whole bunch of people and hope that many of them follow you back. This results in you having 3,000 followers and you are following 3,000 people yourself.
When people see this it looks less professional. They know there is no way you can be listening to what all 3000 people are tweeting about.
On the other hand it is much more impressive if you follow just a few people and yet have hundreds of followers yourself. When people see this they are more likely to follow you in my opinion here.

LG (which just announced the eXpo for AT&T) , might make an Android handset for T-Mobile USA.

According to Strategy Analytics, LG’s market share in North America declined 2 percent in the third quarter of this year, possibly due to its lack of smartphones. Moreover, Verizon (one of LG’s main customers in the US) didn’t include the company’s phones in its holiday promotion program, so now LG is looking for ways to regain its lost market share.
Telecoms Korea says that T-Mobile officials recently visited LG’s Seoul headquarters, which may have led to talks about an Android smartphone – although there’s nothing concrete regarding this for now.

Interestingly, T-Mobile USA doesn’t have any LG phones its current line-up.
LG has officially announced only two Android handsets until now: the GW620(above) and the GW880 for China mobile.

Not long after suing Apple over alleged patent infringements, Nokia has now (well, actually on November 25) filed a new suit, this time against a group of LCD manufacturers, which apparently have “artificially inflated the price of liquid crystal displays ultimately incorporated into LCD products purchased by Nokia, causing Nokia to pay higher prices.”

The LCD makers sued by Nokia include Samsung, LG, AU Optronics, Toshiba, Philips and others.
The lawsuit was filed with the US District Court in San Francisco, California.

If Nokia wins, the mentioned LCD makers will probably have to pay big money to it.
Nokia recently filed a similar lawsuit in the UK, too.

The introduction of iPhone in 2007, changed mobile industry dynamics in a major way.
It introduced extremely usable full touch UI, and shifted the competition from innovation in hardware, to innovation in software, services,  user interface and usability of mobile devices.
At that point in time both, Nokia and Samsung,  were at about the same place, in regards to this shift towards full touch UIs. Both had their own proprietary OSes (S40 for Nokia, own real time OS for Samsung)for their feature phones, both of them dabbled with smartphones.
Well, we can say that Nokia more then dabbled in smartphones, their N-Series handsets were pretty impressive, and had some good sales. They also had a major potential  hit – Nokia N95 – about to ship. But, overall, I’d say that the smartphone category in the beginning of 2007, was a small part of Nokia business, with S40 and S30 devices being the major cash cows.

Samsung’s reaction to iPhone

When the iPhone announcement came, Samsung’s reaction at the time seemed like unwarranted, thoughtless haste, even panic.
Samsung announced their first iPhone response device –F700 Ultra Smart  within a month from the iPhone’s launch. And, judging from lack of leaks and the lead time between announcement and shipping of F700 (about 10 months) – I suspect that in February 2007, it was not much more then an early design prototype, hacked between Jan. 9th (iPhone launch date) and the start of 3GSM show in Feb.  2007.
All Samsung full touch phones, launched in late 2007 – early 2008 (F700, F490, Armani P520) were pretty lame and awful to use. As was the Croix interface used to run them.
But Samsung  kept pouring resources into full touch R&D, and things evolved rapidly since then. The next generation of Samsung full touch UI, now called TouchWiz was unveiled in February 2008, at MWC (former 3GSM)  show in Barcelona. With the first device running it, Samsung F480 still selling briskly today, reaching a total sales volume of over 9 million units recently.
In the meantime, Samsung continued it’s work on touchphones, churning one  full touch handset after another, selling 10 million of them in 2008. And it went into a full touch phone overdrive this year, shipping more 40 million touch devices in the first 11 months.
Samsung also continues to evolve the TouchWiz UI, separating it from the underlying proprietary OS, porting it to Windows Mobile, Symbian,  Android and opening it to third party developers. First, only for Widgets, but soon, when TouchWiz 3 comes in the form of Samsung Bada, for native applications as well.

Nokia, Touch UI and the cost of ignoring it for S40 feature phones

Nokia, on the other hand, decided to play it cool, when they heard about the iPhone.
They took their time to think about it, decided not to bother wasting a lot of time with touch development for S40 feature phones, and chose S60/Symbian as their platform of transition to Touch. And  spent the next 20 months patching S60 UI to work with finger touch, readying their first full touch S60 device (5800 XM) for the market.
Nokia also went on, to create N97. Which, I suspect, was supposed to run the same S60 5th edition as 5800 XM. Only competing UIs moved so far ahead in the meantime, that it was embarrassing to have it on a flagship device. So new features – like live desktop, web runtimes, etc; were added, making the handset’s hardware only marginally able to cope with increased software requirements.
So did Nokia make a mistake, by stopping S40 development too early, ignoring the opportunity to give it touch overhaul, and concentrating on bringing touch UI only to it’s smartphone platform.
In the short term, the answer is definitely yes.
If you listen to Nokia, they are  telling us that they are doing great. They’ve sold 10+ million touch devices in a year. But Samsung's numbers are telling us otherwise They’ve sold 40+  million touch handsets in the same time. They are beating Nokia to pulp, everywhere related to touch, and are starting to make serious inroads elsewhere too.
Samsung Star/Preston are outselling Nokia 5800 XM by at least 2 to 1 margin. For Nokia 5230 and 5530 XM it’s too early to tell, but preliminary indications are that Samsung Corby will outsell them by at least 3:1. It turns out, that at EUR 150-300 price points, consumers do not care much whether your handset is a smart or dumb phone. They just want a nice touch UI, and with a dedicated proprietary featurephone OS, Samsung is faster, leaner and better equipped to provide that.
In the high end smartphones, Samsung i8910 HD, WinMo Omnia family and Android devices should be able to more then hold their own against Nokia N97, N97 mini and N900, too.
In the long run, Nokia should be OK.
They have Maemo, which is changing the way Nokia's design advanced handset, like N900  Nokia has almost figured it out,  how to do a modern touch UI, and should have one even for a mass market Symbian devices, in a year or so. With QT, they will soon have what seems to be a very attractive offer for mobile developers. And Nokia has been heavily throwing resources at  OVI service/portal for two years now. Eventually they are bound to make something work over there.
But in the meantime, by drastically underestimating the consumer demand for full touch devices, and the speed this category will take off, Nokia has given an opening to Samsung. 2 years ago, Nokia’s top spot among handset makers seemed unassailable. Samsung was able to grow to #2 only at the expense of underperforming smaller rivals like Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Siemens Mobile before that.
Today, boosted mainly by the success with it’s touchphones, Samsung is hitting Nokia on every front it can. And, as last quarter numbers, and 2010 forecasts show, is starting to chip away at Nokia’s market share too.
Samsung still has ways to go, but that “biggest cellphone maker in the world” title, does not seem so unattainable anymore.
It will not happen anytime soon, but,   especially if Fins do not get their act together real quick, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Nokia and Samsung going neck to neck for the #1 spot in mobile industry, in 2 or 3 years.

As of today (December 1), millions of cell phones that do not have an IMEI number are being blocked by mobile operators in India.

Phones that don’t have the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity code are cheaper that the normal ones and can’t be traced. Some of these phones have been used in attacks by various Indian militant groups – that’s why the Indian authorities asked carriers to block them.
Apparently, more than 25 million IMEI-less handsets are currently in the hands of Indian mobile users. Most of these phones are unbranded and are either manufactured in India, or imported from China.
